Rights Guide 2019. Children's literature
The Old Lion Publishing House is not only about books. It is primarily about people — those who create them, and those they are created for. Our books are for both kids and adults who choose a book as their true friend. The Old Lion Publishing House is ultimately about humanity, about the books that make us a little happier, stronger, kinder and more fun. It is also about emotions without which our life is tasteless.

It is also about creativity that broadens our horizon and gives us wings. And we, engaging the best world and Ukrainian authors, illustrators, designers and translators to work on books, want to be a little bit of wizards and a little bit of dream makers for our readers. We believe that through joint efforts we change reality for better.

author Myroslav Laiuk, illustrator Katerina Sad

This is an educational picture book about sight from the creative studio Agrafka. It is about both things we can see with our own eyes and the mysterious, invisible to the human eye. This book is also about microscopes and telescopes that help us see incredibly small or extremely distant things. It explains that for better eyesight some people need glasses, while those who can’t see at all need a special system and symbols. By reading this new book, you will learn how birds and animals see the world, how artists create optical illusions, and about the many millions of hues the human eye can perceive.

This unique picture book about hearing and silence, and about sounds that we can or cannot hear, was created by the most renowned Ukrainian illustrators Romana Romanyshyn and Andriy Lesiv, whose books have twice won the Bologna Ragazzi Award. The book is told in many voices: the voice of bright colours, of many interesting facts, of visual images. It contains sounds of noise and music, of city and nature, as well as the oldest sound in our universe and the quietest musical piece in human history. The main characters of the book will lead readers through the whole story, teaching children how deaf people communicate with each other and why silence is so important in our lives.

This board book is a real treasure for kids who are just taking first steps to explore the world around, and their parents. What else if not a book is the best way to start communication with a child? What else if not a native home full of such different and important things is the first place to start discovering the world? Page after page, different rooms and things inside them — a bed, slippers, a cup, a tap, and favourite toys will appear before little amazed eyes. Looking at pictures, touching them, and searching for something new and important, pronouncing or even singing some of the names, repeating after father or mother — the book My Room, My Home, and Things I Own suggests a lot of possibilities for studying, development and spending quality time with a family.

This is a little story about big things like growing up in a community, appreciating similarities and differences in those around us, and finding one's own identity in order to be happy. But it is also about learning how to recognize trees in a park and know them by their leaves, fruit and flowers — a little bit of eco-education conveyed in a very playful, fairy-tale manner. A sprout grows in a park and looks attentively at the trees around it — the birch, oak, rowan tree, lime tree, maple, ash tree, sycamore, chesnut, poplar tree, willow, and ginkgo — trying to discern its own identity by comparing itself to them, getting to know who is who, and figuring out whom it resembles. Because “happiness is having someone like you around”.

The nightingale has returned from distant Africa and is looking for a spot to build its nest. And there are so many trees and bushes in the garden! Which of them would make a good home for a bird? Maybe a sour cherry, a sweet cherry or a cherry plum tree? Maybe a plum or a pear tree? Each tree tells its story to the nightingale, describing its own special traits. The stories of the trees also paint an image of an old gardener, clever and kind, who treated trees as living creatures, talked to them and cherished them, and of his family, still living in the nearby house, who honors the trees and collects their fruit.

The little boy Yas knows so much about bicycles! His parents never part with their “horse bikes”: they ride bikes to work, on short excursions and on journeys. Naturally Yas has also been using all kinds of cycling vehicles since he was knee-high: riding a horse bike, running bike and tricycle, and also travelling on an adult bik, in a special seat for kids. Now that the boy has grown up, it’s time to learn how to ride a bike without additional wheels — an important step in Yas’s bicycle career. The book is interactive: little readers can learn how to draw a bicycle, as artist Tetiana Tsiupka will show them how. The fun and motivational picture book by Kateryna Mikhalitsyna tells about different kinds of bicycle transport, and inspires and teaches to overcome difficulties.

Children love toys, and toy cars might easily be among their favourites. Similarly, children love stories just as much as they do listening to them. This book is a wonderful combination of these two loves, as this is a story about toy cars or, more specifically, about a little boy named Yas who is a happy owner of an impressive car fleet. It is a first-person narration written in a very funny and realistically childish tone. The dynamic illustrations make the book even more playful, simultaneously helping young children focus on the important details and features of each car.
